About Us
Where faith feels like family, since 1807
At Harrisburg United Methodist Church, we believe our church should feel like coming home. For over two centuries, we've stood as a gathering place for faith, fellowship, and friendship in the heart of Harrisburg, Ohio. Our traditional worship style is rooted in scripture, prayer, and music, but our spirit is warm, welcoming, and never stuffy. Whether you're joining us for the first time or returning after years away, you'll find an open door and friendly faces waiting to greet you.
We're a multigenerational church where everyone has a place, from toddlers in the nursery to longtime members who can recall stories passed down through the generations. We don't just go to church, we are the church. And we'd love for you to be part of our story.
Our History
More than 200 years of worship, community, and tradition
Our story begins on the American frontier. In 1799, brothers Thomas and Elijah Chenoweth left Ross County and settled in what would become Pleasant Township in Franklin County. Life was rough and rugged, but their faith was strong. Early Methodist worshippers gathered in log homes, with traveling circuit riders bringing the Word of God to remote areas.
On
November 21, 1807, a group gathered in Thomas Chenoweth's home for what would become the first recorded quarterly meeting of the Harrisburg Methodist class. That moment marked the official birth of what would become Harrisburg United Methodist Church.
As the town of Harrisburg took shape, so did the church. A brick sanctuary was built in 1842, large enough for the growing congregation and also used as a school and town hall. In 1859, the land was donated by the Chenoweth family, and the church building you see today was constructed with over
166,000 bricks, 18-inch-thick walls, and a vision of permanence and purpose. Back then, men and women entered through separate doors and sat on opposite sides of the sanctuary, but all gathered in unity of worship.
Over the decades, the church has grown with the times while honoring its roots. A bell added in 1870 rang out in joy and sorrow, from funeral tolls to the celebration of Armistice Day in 1918. In 1911, stained-glass windows were installed in memory of early members, each pane a tribute to a life of faith. From major building additions in the 1960s and 1980s to the restoration of the bell tower in 2007, every change has told the same story: God is not finished with us yet.
In 1978, we merged with Grace United Methodist Church, bringing together two historic congregations under one roof. Grace Chapel, inside our current building, still honors that legacy.
Today, our church continues to be a pillar in the community. Weddings, homecomings, Christmas Eve services, and even high school graduations have all taken place within these walls. Through it all, one thing remains: the faith that started in a log cabin over 200 years ago still lives on here, one Sunday at a time.
A Warm Welcome Awaits You
At Harrisburg UMC, you'll never be a stranger. Whether you're looking for a church home or just curious about who we are, we welcome you with open arms and open hearts. Our traditional worship service may follow a familiar rhythm, hymns, scripture, a message, and prayer, but what makes it special is the people who fill the pews.
We're a close-knit church family, but there's always room for more. Visitors often say the atmosphere feels comfortable, like visiting family you didn't know you had. We greet each other by name, celebrate milestones together, and show up when someone needs a helping hand. You don't have to have everything figured out to be here. You just have to be willing to show up. And when you do, you'll be met with kindness and community.
Childcare You Can Count On
We understand that it can be hard to focus on worship when you're juggling diaper bags, sippy cups, and restless little ones. That's why we offer
trusted, age-appropriate childcare during Sunday services. Our nursery is clean, safe, and staffed by volunteers who are not only trained but truly care about your children's well-being.

Come As You Are
No need for fancy clothes. No need for perfect faith. No need to have it all together. Just come.
At Harrisburg UMC, we're not about appearances or pretenses. We're about real people doing our best to live out God's love. You'll see folks in jeans, polos, dresses, and flannel shirts. And you'll hear laughter as often as you hear "amen." That's because we believe the church is a place to be authentic, not to impress.
So, whether you're new to church, returning after a break, or searching for something deeper, we want you to know
you are welcome here just as you are.
